Granulation in Gold & Silver with Linda Lewin

Granulation in Gold & Silver with Linda Lewin
Tell me about it
Join artist-jeweller Linda Lewin for a three-day practical masterclass in granulation and chemical soldering, an ancient jewellery technique still dazzling today. You’ll learn how to apply this delicate, decorative process to your own contemporary designs while exploring its deep roots in jewellery history.
The course begins with a short introduction to the origins and science of granulation before moving swiftly into hands-on making. You’ll create your own granules, practise a range of surface applications, and experiment with both silver and gold, depending on your confidence and ambition.
By the end of the three days, you’ll have built an impressive set of samples along with the knowledge, tools, and techniques to continue exploring this timeless craft in your own studio.
Can I do this class?
This class welcomes all skill levels, from confident beginners to experienced jewellers. Familiarity with tools and basic techniques is helpful but not essential - curiosity, focus, and patience are what matter most. You’ll need good eyesight [or strong glasses!], a steady hand, and a love for fine detail.
What happens?
Day One:
Presentation on the history and artistry of granulation
Prepare sheet and wire materials - precision is key!
Make two styles of granules [even and irregular]
Learn to fix granules with a chemical soldering solution
Day Two:
Explore four application methods: Point, Linear, Field, and Cluster
Add decorative elements like sheet and wire
Afternoon option to progress into working with 18ct or 22ct gold
Day Three:
Develop personal design ideas and select the best samples for a finished piece
Guided one-to-one support with Linda
Group reflection and discussion on applying granulation techniques beyond the class
You’ll leave with a set of finished samples, new technical mastery, and confidence to continue practising this ancient art.
Do I need to bring anything?
Bring a sketchbook or notebook for ideas and notes. Because this is fine, detailed work, optivisors or strong glasses are highly recommended.
We’ll provide a starter pack of Britannia silver, plus a charcoal block, paintbrush, and bottle of fusing liquid to take home. After discussion with Linda on Day One, students can order 22ct gold from Cooksons for next-day delivery if desired.
You’ll have your own bench and full access to our professional tools, but feel free to bring your favourites if you prefer. Please tie back long hair, avoid open-toed shoes, and keep clothing fitted.
Who is teaching me?
Linda Lewin is an artist-jeweller based in the Scottish Borders, with over 40 years of professional experience in making, exhibiting, and teaching. After training in Sheffield, she studied ancient jewellery techniques in New York, where she mastered 22ct gold granulation, a process that transformed her approach to metalwork.
Linda describes granulation as “a way of holding hands with our ancestors.”
